EL Teacher Featured in ILA's 30 Under 30

Minnetonka Middle School East English Language Learner Teacher, Anna Bjork, was featured in the International Literacy Association's (ILA) 30 Under 30 list. This recognition shines a spotlight on the next generation of leaders who are working to create positive change in the global literacy landscape.

Representing 30 individuals from 12 countries, the 2021 list of honorees includes educators, nonprofit leaders, authors, volunteers, researchers and social entrepreneurs. Though their roles may differ, they all belong to a growing cohort of young innovators, disrupters and visionaries in the field of English language learning.

"I became an EL teacher because I believe that every child deserves a quality education," said Bjork. "English literacy is a prerequisite to succeed in our educational system, and without it so many EL students would not be able to even participate, much less be successful, in school. When those language barriers are removed and students can access the content they are learning, then they can unlock future possibilities for themselves. I've seen my students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities as their English skills improved. Watching them open up and support themselves, [and] even their own families at times, has been the greatest gift."

"The start of 2021 is filled with much promise thanks to the work of this year's class of honorees," said ILA Executive Director Marcie Craig Post in a recent press release. "Their work—whether it's research on multicultural literacy, helping young students find the power of their voice, or dismantling systems of oppression in education—is impacting the lives of countless individuals and communities."

"I'm grateful to be recognized for this award," concluded Bjork, "but I'm even more thankful for the opportunity to emphasize the importance of EL education for these students. Being able to work closely with EL students and their families has been inspirational and emotional at times, but I'm glad that I have had these opportunities. I'm so excited to continue my passion of being an EL Teacher here at Minnetonka Public Schools!"

ILA's 30 Under 30 honorees are featured in the January/February 2021 issue of Literacy Today, ILA's bimonthly magazine. To view the Literacy Today feature and read more about the honorees' accomplishments, visit literacyworldwide.org/30under30.
